Effective workouts should not cause muscle fatigue or break down muscle fiber. When the body is in a negative fuel condition it consumes muscle fiber for energy, a condition called cannibalization. This is the exact opposite of training objectives.

The Hormone Cortisol

If glycogen stores in the muscle are low, cortisol takes over and converts amino acids (used to build proteins, and muscle) into carbohydrates for energy. This limits muscle building severely and the body starts consuming muscles
